Label

Each shadow box contains one spread specimen of a Magicicada sp. Brood X periodical cicada from the 2021 emergence, and a shed pupal carapace. Optionally, a label containing the species, brood number and year of collection can be added to the display. 

All insects are collected post mortem, having lived out their natural lifespan in the wild, so some may have very slight damage to a wing or their body. However, they are all preserved and displayed as carefully and respectfully as possible.

These pieces are all made to order, so please allow 7-10 days for assembly. 

Upon request, an additional cicada (either a larger specimen or one with folded wings, or both) may be added to the display for an additional fee. Please contact me before placing your order if you would like to request this option.

Materials

All fairies are cast in resin from a hand-scuplted original, and then carefully painted to resemble a naturally mummified creature. It is finally given real insect wings* and mounted under a glass dome to keep it protected. The domes are affixed to either wood or brass bases, ensuring the fairy and its wings are protected.

*All insects used in these sculptures are ethically sourced, mostly from ecologically friendly farms, where they live out a natural lifespan. None are wild-caught or killed prematurely. For more information, please see my FAQ regarding where I source the insect wings.

Shipping & Returns

I take great care with the packaging of my fairies, but if anything happens to them during shipping, please contact me immediately. I will either replace the piece, or offer a full or partial refund, depending on the circumstances and at the buyer’s discretion.

Dimensions

Fairies and pixies come in a variety of sized domes.

Fairies:
With few exceptions*, the glass dome measures 11” tall (nearly 12” with the base) and 7” wide. The fairy inside measures about 4” tall, with wingspans between 3” and 5”.

Pixies:
The glass domes for pixies measure about 7” tall and 4” wide. The pixie inside measures about 2” tall, with wingspans between 1” and 3”.

*On occasion, I will offer larger domes for either a single fairy with very large wings, or multiple individuals. These domes are a nearly 13” tall with the base, and about 9” wide. A single fairy that would be housed in these domes would have a wingspa measuring between 6” and 14”.

Care Instructions

Very little care is necessary for these fairies; just a bit of dusting as needed. Insect wings will start to fade in the sun, however, so if you want to keep them vibrant, keep them out of direct sunlight. Also, try to keep any with wood bases away from moisture, as it may cause warping. Should the dome ever need to be removed for any reason, please contact me for further instructions.
